Can you smell the sweat, fresh-cut grass and thirst-quenching sports drinks? Football is here. Mississippi State has its first practice of the season later today, and the world of football news has joined the festivities, bursting at the seams with fresh information. We’ll try to catch you up here.
The Paul Hornung Award watch list was released today, an honor given annually to the most versatile player in college football. Two Bulldogs made the list, with senior receiver Chad Bumphis and senior cornerback Johnthan Banks earning recognition.
In addition to receiving, Bumphis has been a rusher, a passer and a punt returner over his career at MSU. Banks is a corner now, but he has played safety, as well, and he added punt returning to his resume’ last fall. He even had a go at receiver in the spring game, though I’m not sure how likely it is we see that this season.
Next on today’s docket, USA TODAY released the preseason top 25 coaches poll. MSU was not ranked, but did receive 21 votes. The Southeastern Conference was well-represented, however, as five of the top 10 teams hail from the SEC, with LSU and Alabama taking the No. 1 and 2 spots, respectively. MSU will face four teams from this initial poll, starting with No. 25 Auburn on September 8 in Starkville.
Speaking of Auburn, ESPN announced today that when the Bulldogs host the Tigers in just over one month, the game will be available in 3D for those with the capability to watch such a broadcast.
As if that tilt wasn’t big enough as the first SEC game of the season and televised on ESPN, it will now be broadcast in three dimensions.
Finally, as a follow-up to the video with coaches yesterday, MSU shot another few minutes of footage with some of the football players as they get ready for the first practice. You can hear from Nick Griffin, Cam Lawrence, Josh Boyd and Joe Morrow in the video below.
