If you thought we were too close to kickoff for Mississippi State to get any more preseason honors, then partner, you were wrong.
Today, for whatever reason, the Bulldogs have been raking in the accolades from national outlets like Yahoo! and ESPN.
Mike Huguenin of Yahoo! Sports released his Southeastern Conference preview, complete with predictions and All-Conference selections.
In his All-SEC list, Huguenin named senior cornerback Johnthan Banks and senior linebacker Cam Lawrence to his first team, while Banks also earned second-team honors for special teams. Junior guard Gabe Jackson was named to Huguenin’s second-team All-SEC squad, as well.
Additionally, junior college transfer defensive end Denico Autry was named “Best Defensive Newcomer.”
Huguenin, on a less positive note, picked State to finish sixth in the SEC West and said it has the easiest schedule in the conference (which I wouldn’t consider a bad thing).
Over at the Worldwide Leader, longtime ESPN College Gameday personality and college football connoisseur Kirk Herbstreit had some high praise for Dan Mullen’s Bulldogs in the 12th annual Herbie Awards, naming MSU his No. 1 surprise team for 2012.
Herbie listed Banks as the No. 3 defensive back in the country and had Lawrence at No. 3 in his “Basic Instinct” category.
I’m not entirely sure what that means, but I think it implies Lawrence is a natural and smart football player, rather than able to survive in the wild for days or weeks on his own. Though there is certainly something to be said for survival ability.
Speaking of Lawrence, he was subtly hilarious in this video. I won’t give away too many details, but I’ll say it involves milking a cow, tossing bales of hay and possibly even falling in love with a heifer.
