As you read this, you may be on your way to Starkville, getting ready in town or somewhere in The Junction hanging out with Bulldogs from all over.
Here’s The Rundown
The Game: Alcorn State vs. Mississippi State, Starkville, Miss., 2:30 p.m. central, broadcast on CSS.
The Keys: “Finish.” I put the word in quotes because that’s what Dan Mullen has said all week. MSU didn’t finish drives last week and that’s his message to the team.
Get the offense going. There is no breath left in the lifeless horse we keep beating, but outside of the obvious need to score points to win, that side of the ball for the Dawgs could use a confidence boost and needs to get into a rhythm with SEC games starting next week.
Matchup to Watch: MSU’s defensive line and ASU’s rush attack. Geoff Collins’ defense did a truly stellar job stopping Oklahoma State’s vaunted air attack last week, but ultimately the Cowboy run game – led by their mobile quarterback – is what won them the game.
Defensive coaches and players have said they made adjustments in practice the last week and they’ll have the opportunity to exercise them today.
Underrated Storylines: The big one here – literally and figuratively – is the right guard position on MSU’s offensive line. Mullen said starter Justin Malone is doubtful to play this week, meaning someone else will start and play the game. Ben Beckwith has worked as the backup and took Malone’s place when he was hurt last week, and now sophomore tackle Damien Robinson has been practicing at guard and may also help fill the void.
Game MVPs: Sophomore quarterback Dak Prescott, junior receiver Robert Johnson and freshman defensive end Chris Jones.
