At 1 p.m. Dan Mullen will hold his weekly Monday press conference as the Bulldogs prepare to travel to South Carolina for their second game against an SEC East opponent in as many weeks.
We’ll have live updates on his thoughts and comments here.
Injury news: linemen Torrey Dale and Jordan Washington are out, as is tight end Brandon Hill. Brandon Holloway, Jeremey Chappelle and Tyler Russell are all limited in practice, but should be able to play, Mullen says.
Also, looks like Mullen got a haircut.
Mullen says South Carolina has “the best defensive player in college football.” Jadaveon Clowney, presumptively. Also says Gamecocks have best running back in the SEC in Mike Davis. “Can make you miss … And he’s a power runner, gets a lot of yards after contact … Also a really good receiver.”
Lot of praise from Mullen for USC quarterback Connor Shaw, “a winner at the quarterback position.” Says he can run, pass and will always do whatever is needed to make plays and win.
Interesting, too, to hear Mullen talk about Steve Spurrier, who he was a big fan of growing up. Loved watching his offense at Florida, even if Mullen doesn’t use a ton of it in his offense now.
Asked about D-linemen Denico Autry and Kaleb Eulls and and seeming lack of production, says the stats (or lack thereof) don’t tell the story. Says he judges based on film and that they’ve been great there, covering gaps, creating pressure, etc.
More on Clowney: “I don’t know how you contain him. He’s gonna make his plays. The one mistake you can make is going into it and saying ‘We’re gonna take him out of the game.’ We have to make sure we limit the amount of plays he can make or limit the effect those plays he has on the game. Hey, chances are he’s gonna get a sack. That’s OK.”
Ha. Mullen on play calling against Kentucky: “I like the last one. Taking a knee. Statistically, that’s usually pretty good.”
Did say, though, he liked most of the play calls, but not the final two on MSU’s last drive when it was trying to get another score. Blames himself for those.
